The Mount Vernon Fire Department was officially organized in 1891 and purchased that same year an American LaFrance steam powered fire engine and two hand drawn hose carts with 800 feet of hose, enough to reach from one end of town to the other. It served as a city service as well as a social club creating a "family" made up of firefighters, children, wives, and other citizens. The department has changed a lot over the years, but we still have a family relationship among our members that work very hard to serve the citizens of Mount Vernon and Skagit County.

Today, our department is staffed by 36 civil service positions and 1 civilian position who are fully paid. The Mount Vernon Fire Department is under the direction of the Fire Chief, appointed by the Mayor, which consists of four branches: Administration, Operations, Prevention, and Training.
