Fall & Winter Gardening Begins in Summer

July 24 @ 6pm

Would you like to enjoy fresh-picked carrots in December? Savor spinach, kale and other greens throughout the winter? Harvest broccoli and cauliflower late into the year? You can - if you plan and plant in July and August. Learn why a fall garden must be started in the summer; which varieties are best for late-season harvest; and strategies for protecting your garden from frost and cold. New and experienced gardeners alike will learn how to extend your growing season well into the cold season. Master Gardener Valerie Rose will be presenting this program. Presented by Skagit County Master Gardener, Valerie Rose

More Dig into Fall classes scheduled for September and October include Ground Covers, Mon., Sept. 18th, Gardening with Native Plants on Monday, October 23rd, and the final class in the series, The Sinister Garden, on Monday, October 30th.

All classes are held in the library's Resources Room and are free and open to the public.

See and learn about 15 exotic reptiles from around the world. Reptile Man brings in a variety of reptiles, turtles, an alligator and numerous types of snakes. As a zoologist and educator, Reptile Man shows each animal and talks about their individual importance to the balance of nature. Certain animals are available for petting following the performance. All dangerous snakes have been surgically devenomized. This program is co-sponsored by the Friends of the Skagit Libraries and the Mount Vernon Parks and Recreation Department.

Library Telescope Program

Thanks to the Island County Astronomical Society

The Mount Vernon Public Library has added two Orion StarBlast 4.5 inch telescope that you can check out with your library card for two weeks.

The telescope was donated by Island County Astronomical Society and they help support it with occasional classes and their own meetings to share information and activities. This is part of a national program established by the New Hampshire Astronomical Society.

It is a great family activity and there lots of books in our library to introduce you to the skies. The telescope is loaned out for two weeks at a time. We anticipate requests to be high throughout the spring and summer months.
