Hello! One Year On! (Español ↓)

A few days ago, we celebrated our first anniversary at the Mount Vernon Library Commons. Around here, that news comes as a surprise. Although the days are often super busy, the year flew by for us, and this anniversary seemed to come out of nowhere.

One highlight of this year has been our teen space. Over this past year, circulation has increased by more than 400% and daily use has gone from virtually nothing to thousands of visits a month. Time for reading is essential for teenage brain development, but time is at an incredible disadvantage in a landscape of optimized attention media. Every new teenage reader seems like a victory to us.

November is an exciting month for us because our Commisary Kitchen is on the verge of completion. If all goes well this month, I'll announce that the kitchen is open for applications in our December newsletter. Like many features of this building, it is a first-of-its-kind library offering (as far as we can tell). Libraries are built on the idea of empowerment, but I don't know of many who have created a space designed to empower entrepreneurship so directly. We are grateful for the foundation's support to get this project off the ground.

Finally, we have 168 parking spaces in the garage (of all types), and in a given year, the library staff does about 168 storytimes (both in and out of the library). Next time you drive through the library garage, envision a group of kids enjoying 30 minutes of reading as you pass each space. It is a real impact.

Foundation News

Did you know that despite the new building, the library's operational supply budget has remained unchanged for nearly a decade? That's why the foundation's work is so important. We fill in the gaps where limited resources can't stretch anymore. This year, we provided books for over 1,000 local kids participating in summer reading, bought vital technology, and supported the launch of the Commisary Kitchen. Next year, with limited city budgets, our work will be even more vital. Consider supporting or joining us in the year ahead..

DIY Clay Pins

Hace unos días celebramos nuestro primer aniversario en la Biblioteca Común de Mount Vernon. Por aquí, la noticia nos sorprendió. Aunque los días suelen ser muy ocupados, el año se nos pasó volando y este aniversario pareció surgir de la nada.

Un momento destacado de este año ha sido nuestro espacio para adolescentes. Durante el último año, la circulación de materiales ha aumentado en más del 400 % y el uso diario ha pasado de prácticamente nada a miles de visitas al mes. El tiempo para leer es esencial para el desarrollo cerebral de los adolescentes, pero el tiempo está en desventaja en un panorama de medios que optimizan la atención. Cada nuevo lector adolescente nos parece una victoria.

Noviembre es un mes emocionante para nosotros porque nuestra Cocina Comisariato está a punto de completarse. Si todo va bien este mes, anunciaré que la cocina está abierta para solicitudes en nuestro boletín de diciembre. Como muchas características de este edificio, es una oferta bibliotecaria pionera (hasta donde sabemos). Las bibliotecas se basan en la idea del empoderamiento, pero no conozco muchas que hayan creado un espacio diseñado para impulsar el emprendimiento de forma tan directa. Agradecemos el apoyo de la fundación para sacar adelante este proyecto.

Por fin, contamos con 168 plazas de aparcamiento en el garaje (de todo tipo), y para finales de este año, el personal de la biblioteca habrá impartido al menos 168 horas de cuentos (tanto dentro como fuera de la biblioteca). La próxima vez que pase por el garaje de la biblioteca, imagínese a un grupo de niños disfrutando de 30 minutos de lectura al pasar por cada plaza. Es un gran impacto.
