LIBRARY Volunteering
Interested in volunteering at the library?
Here are some answers to frequently asked questions!
Who can volunteer at the Library?
At the library, everyone is welcome, however, to volunteer with us, you must be:
- at least 16 years old.
- able to pass a criminal background check.
What will I be doing?
The area of greatest need is shelving materials. This involves sorting materials alphanumerically and placing them in their appropriate place on the shelves, which involves bending frequently to the floor (rolling stools are available), pushing a book cart, light lifting, and is repetitive in nature. See Page Volunteer Description for more details, or take a look at the resources below to learn more about shelving!

Another area of need is light cleaning. Tasks will vary but may include sanitizing surfaces, dusting, and general tidying, which involves bending, walking, and light lifting. See Library Keeper Volunteer Description for more details.
There may be other duties as assigned and based on your individual interests.
What is the schedule?
Flexible! We can accommodate most schedules, as long as they fall within regular business hours:
M-F 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM
Sat 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Shifts are a minimum of one hour and we ask for a general timeframe to ensure there is an even distribution of volunteers throughout the week.
What is the commitment?
We ask that you commit to a minimum of 6 months, 1 shift per week. We understand that life happens, we will work with you to find the best fit and can adjust as needed.
If this sounds like a good fit, please fill out the volunteer application and return it at your convenience, along with a photo ID. If you have questions, please email us at mvlibrary@mountvernonwa.gov.
