Join us in the Library, Monday, June 20 at 6:30 pm, for "Chautauqua, Then and Now." Paul Magid, director and founding member of the New Old Time Chautauqua, will discuss the past and present of the Chautauqua movement, and its specific history in Mount Vernon and the surrounding area.
The original Chautauqua movement was born in upstate New York and involved presenters who would come to a community to “entertain, inspire, educate & celebrate.” The “Chautauqua circuit” visited towns all over the country between the late 1800’s and up into Depression times. Chautauqua came to Mount Vernon in 1914. The hard times of the Depression eventually killed off the original Chautauqua movement; Paul Magid and the New Old Time Chautauqua are revivalists of the community building mission of the original movement.
The New Old Time Chautauqua is coming to town in July with events scheduled for Larabee State park on July 29 & Mount Vernon on July 30th.
