Department's Mission Statement

Development Services improves the quality of life in Mount Vernon by promoting community health, safety, and well-being. We support responsible, equitable development and assist individuals and organizations in navigating regulatory processes to ensure compliance with city codes. Our team is committed to providing responsive, consistent, and friendly service to meet community needs.

The Development Services Department includes building, code enforcement, engineering, and planning.  This combination of professionals allows us to review, approve, and monitor development to serve our customers and facilitate the development process. These services ensure projects are safe and aligned with applicable regulations.  Additional information on the Department’s divisions is found below.  

  1. Building: performs permit reviews, code interpretations, building inspections, and code enforcement.
  2. Engineering: regulates public infrastructure design and installation, and issues permits for sewers (sanitary and storm) and the associated earth disturbing activities.
  3. Planning: processes both current and long-range projects and plans by maintaining compliance with the Growth Management Act (GMA) and related legislative issues.
